Today (October 01) is the 79th birthday of Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, former health minister and BNP standing committee member as well as a heroic freedom fighter.

Born on October 1, 1946 in a renowned Muslims family in Goyeshpur village under Daudkandi upazilla in Cumilla, he completed his Matriculation from Daudkandi High School in 1962 and ISC from Govt. Chittagong College in 1964. He completed MSC degree in Geology from Dhaka University in 1968.
Dr Mosharraf joined the Dhaka University as a lecturer in 1969 and in the same year he went to the United Kingdom (UK) for higher study by obtaining a 'Colombo Plan Scholarship'.

He obtained his MSC degree from Imperial College in 1970 and DIC diploma in 1973 and PhD degree under
London University in 1974.

 After returning the country Dr Mosharraf joined the Department of Geology as Assistant Professor and elevated to Professor in 1987. He became the chairman of the department from 1987 to 1990.

Dr Khandaker Mosharraf was elected as the Asst. Secretary of the Salimullah Muslim Hall in 1964-65 and Vice President of the Haji Mohammad Mohsin Hall in 1967-68 respectively.

Dr Mosharraf has played a significant role during the War of Liberation in 1971 by organising expatriates Bangladeshis and played a bold role as a convenor of Chatra Sangram Parishad in London.

Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain has been listed as a heroic freedom fighter since the first gazette published after independence.
 The current government has gazetted the name of Dr. Mosharraf as a heroic freedom fighter in the category of "Building global opinion abroad". He was detained approximately 5 years in 1986, 1996, 2007, 2012 and 2014.

Dr Mosharraf joined BNP in 1979 by responding to the call of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, founder of BNP.  He has been BNP Standing Committee member since 1994. He was elected four times as a Member of Parliament (MP).

He became minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources from 1991 to 1996. He also briefly served as Home minister in 1996.

He again served as Health and Family Welfare minister from 2001 to 2006.

Dr Mosharraf has played an instrumental role in establishing Titas upazial under Cumilla. He implemented various development activities worth Tk 100 million (Tk 1000 crore) in his local area. Founded by him, Dr Mosharraf Foundation has established two colleges, three high schools, one madrasha and one Orphanage at Daudkandi and Titas Upzillas in Cumilla.  He also received national gold medal award for his innovative ideas for fish farming in tidal areas which is widely known as 'Daudkandi Model'.

Dr Mosharraf was elected as President of World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2003. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has conferred him 'World No Tobacco Award -2004' in 2004 for his contribution on framing anti tobacco control law in the country and global movement against tobacco.

Dr Mosharraf is the author of thirteen books such as Fish farming in Tidal area: Daudkandi Model, Sangshade Kotha Bola Jay, Contribution to the War of Liberation by the Bangladeshis in UK, Ay Somoer Kichu Katha, Fakhruddin-Moin Uddiner Karagaree 616 Din, Samoyer Bhabna, Rajnitir Halcal and Jaruri Ainer Sarkerer Dui Bachor (2007 & 2008), Mulyabodh Obkkhayer Khanda Citra, Pragoti O Satyer Sandhanee, Koronakale Bangladesh (Songramoner Dosh Mas), Smritir Album and Amar Rajnitir Rojnamca.

About 29 scientific articles written by him were also published in the national and international Journals.
