Low pressure may intensify into severe cyclone

A low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal has intensified and could strengthen into a cyclone, says the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

On Monday, the weather warning stated that the low pressure located in the eastern central Bay of Bengal and the adjacent northern Andaman Sea has intensified into a distinct low pressure system while remaining in the same area. It is expected to move further west-northwest, potentially evolving into a depression and then a deep depression before developing into a cyclone.

If the low pressure transforms into a cyclone, it will be named 'Dana,' a name proposed by Qatar, meaning 'a very beautiful and valuable pearl' in Arabic.
The cyclones in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are named by the World Meteorological Organisation's regional cyclone agency ESCAP, reports bdnews24.com.

New cyclone names are selected sequentially from a list provided by 13 countries in the region.

The India Meteorological Department, or IMD, said the low pressure in the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjacent Andaman Sea could intensify into a depression by Tuesday and potentially evolve into a cyclone by Wednesday. It may strengthen further into a severe cyclone and cross the Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and the Sagar Islands on Thursday, between noon and evening Bangladesh time.

In a regular weather bulletin, the BMD said there might be rain or thundershowers in a few places in the Chattogram Division within the next 24 hours from 6pm Monday.

Meanwhile, the weather will remain mainly dry with partly cloudy skies in other regions.

The weather office has advised fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal and the deep sea to navigate cautiously near the coast until further notice.

As of 6pm on Monday, two millimetres of rainfall had been recorded in Cox's Bazar and Teknaf, while no rain was reported in other areas of the country.
The last cyclone to hit the Bangladeshi coast was 'Remal' on May 26, resulting in a total of 76 deaths in Bangladesh and India.
