Former NSI Director General Wahidul Haque gets bail

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has granted bail to Muhammad Wahidul Haque, former Director General (DG) of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and the Passport Department, on charges of committing crimes against humanity during the War of Independence. A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md. Mozibur Rahman Miah, passed the order.

Abdus Sattar Palwan, Defence Lawyer for the accused, said, "The court imposed certain conditions on the bail. Among these, former NSI is prohibited to meet and threaten witnesses, speaking to the media, leaving his residence, traveling overseas and his passport will be surrendered on bail to the court. Muhammad Wahidul Haque has been given a condition to appear on the dates of the case."

The former NSI Md. Wahidul is accused of killing 500 to 600 Bengali and Santal people using machine guns at the Rangpur Cantonment on Mar 28, 1971. He was commissioned in the Pakistan Army's 11th Cavalry regiment on Oct 16, 1966 and got transferred to the 29th Cavalry later. He worked there as an adjutant until Mar 30, 1971, according to the case dossier. Later, he was transferred to the NSI. Further, he served as the Director General of the Department of Immigration and Passports from 1997 to 2002 and Additional IG of police until 2005.
