Syed Munira Islam, a leading advocate for individuals with autism and disabilities, is poised to participate in an international conference in the United States focused on autism spectrum disorder. Her nomination underscores her remarkable contributions to social welfare, innovative initiatives, and tireless dedication to improving the lives of children with autism in Bangladesh.
Mrs. Islam’s journey into advocacy began with a deeply personal experience—her daughter’s diagnosis with autism spectrum disorder. This life-changing event inspired her to pursue training in autism management and become a powerful voice for families facing similar challenges.
A graduate in Zoology from Dhaka University and a former Biology professor, both in Bangladesh and abroad, Mrs. Islam transitioned from academia to social advocacy with a singular focus on creating a more inclusive society. As the General Secretary of the "Parents Forum for Differently Able," she spearheaded campaigns to raise awareness about disability rights and founded the Inspiration Welfare Society, an organization providing vital support to marginalized communities. Through this organization, she has implemented therapy programs, vocational training, and mental health interventions while also rehabilitating individuals with severe mental health challenges and hosting healthcare camps for families impacted by autism.
Her media initiative, Hat BariyeDilam, aired on RTV, has been instrumental in showcasing the talents of autistic children. This program, recognized by UNICEF, has not only raised awareness but also celebrated the achievements of children with autism. In her advisory roles with government ministries, she has influenced policy changes to address the needs of individuals with disabilities, further solidifying her impact.
Mrs. Islam’s advocacy extends to her family as well. Her daughter, FablihaAzim, now a celebrated autistic entrepreneur, has gained national recognition for her handcrafted jewelry and artwork, inspiring families across Bangladesh.
For her relentless efforts, Mrs. Islam has received several prestigious accolades, including the Prime Minister’s Award in 2019, the Autism UttaranSammamona Award, and the RTV MonimixPreronaPadak 2020. These honors reflect her unwavering dedication and the tangible change she has brought to her community.
Her attendance at the upcoming conference will provide her an opportunity to share her experiences, connect with global experts, and further advance her mission of inclusion and advocacy. Mrs. Islam’s work continues to inspire, demonstrating the profound impact of compassion, determination, and collaboration in creating a better world for individuals with autism.
