Illegal sand lifting: Dredgers seized, four jailed

A mobile court on Wednesday seized four dredgers and jailed four people for 15 days while they were illegally lifting sand from Meghna river in Kanainagar area under Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria. The convicted were identified as Md Sohag (20), Nirob Mia (19), Shaheen Mia (32) and Md Abdullah (24).

A racket was illegally extracting sand from the Meghna river in Marichakandi and Kanainagar areas in Bancharampur upazila for over a month.
Kaiyum Mia, a Jubo Dal leader of Alokbali union under Narsingdi's Raipura upazila, was leading the racket. Another group from Raipura is lifting sand from the river in Dharabhanga area under Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria.

In such a situation, the mobile court conducted the raid.

Md Nazrul Islam, Assistant Commissioner (Land) in Brancharampur upazila, said, "Four dredgers have been seized from Kanainagar area while a group was extracting sand from Meghna river. Besides, four people were handed down non-rigorous imprisonment for 15days."
