Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has recently inaugarated the distribution of smartcards at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium earlier as part of digital technology expansion. As said by the Asaduzzaman, Director of the Public Relations Department, Election Commission, the process will start with an initial distribution of 50 million smartcards, starting at Ramna and Uttqara, and then the rest of the country.
More than 9 million new voters, i.e. those above the age of 18 years, will be receiving the card. By the end of 2017, atleast 10 million new smart cards will have been distributed.The new National Identity Smartcards require all 10 fingerprints and a digital image of the eye for iris recognition. This data will be stored in the card's chip along with 16 other pieces of information once the card holder becomes eligible to vote.
Information that was in the previous NIDs will also be retained, including the card holders name, parent's names, occupation, permanent address, current address, age, marital status, date of birth, blood group, place of birth, educational qualifications, visible identification mark and religion. Apart from these basic pieces of information, driving license, passport nnumber, income tax certificate number, telephone and mobile numbers, parent's NID numbers, spouse's name and NID number, if parents or wife has passed; that information will also be included, any information about disabilities the card holder may have.
The project will cost approximately 800 crore Taka. An additional 83 crore will be required to spend for distribution. This means the project may require about 900 crore Taka to be fulfilled. The advantage with smart cards is that they cannot be forged or duplicated and is more secure.
