A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for former prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Barrister Tureen Afroz in a case of attempted murder related to the July uprising in the capital's Uttara West Police Station.
On Tuesday, Tureen was presented before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka by the police.
Subsequently, the investigation officer, SI Suman Mia of Uttara West Police Station, filed a petition for a ten-day remand to ensure a thorough investigation into the case.
On the other hand, Tureen herself presented her statement in court, although no lawyer represented her. The prosecution, led by the Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi, argued in favour of remanding Tureen.
After hearing both sides, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain passed the remand order. Sub-Inspector Atikur Rahman Khan, the general registration officer of Uttara West Police Station, confirmed the development to the court.
Earlier, on the night of April 7, Tureen was arrested following a raid at a house in Uttara.
According to the case details, Abdul Jobbar, a student, was shot on August 5 at around 12:00 pm in front of the BNS Center on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, located under the jurisdiction of Uttara West Police Station, on the last day of the anti-discrimination student movement.
He was treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On March 27, the case was filed at Uttara West Police Station, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 50 others, along with 100-150 unnamed people as defendants.
Tureen Afroz is listed as accused number 30 in the case.
She served as a prosecutor at the International Crimes Tribunal from 2013 until November 2019, during the trials of war crimes committed in 1971.
