Coast guard detains 8 people for illegal sand lifting in Munshiganj

Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) detained 8 people for illegal sand lifting from Meghna river in Gazaria of Munshiganj on Wednesday.

The detainees have been identified as Md Salauddin, 45, Md Mainuddin, 35, Md Sumon, 25, Md Ashraful, 17, and Md Jisan, 19, residents of Lakshmipur and Md Tamim Howlader, 17, a resident of Bhola and Md Shahadat, 14, and Md Wahid, 40, residents of Chandpur district.

Lieutenant Commander Harun-Or-Rashid, media officer of coast guard headquarters, confirmed the matter on Wednesday afternoon.

He said, "Acting on a tip-off, a coast guard from BCG Gazaria and Pagla Stations conducted a raid at Jamalpur under Gazaria police station early morning. During the drive, 8 sand lifter including 4 teenagers with 3 dredgers, 3 bulkheads were detained.

Later, the seized dredgers were searched, from where a country-made pistol, 1 round of ammunition, a country-made weapon, Tk 25,866 in cash and 7 mobile phones were seized." Arrangements are underway to take further legal action against the detainees, the media officer added.
