Special benefits announced for government employees

The government has announced a special benefit package for public sector employees and pensioners, set to take effect from July 1, as part of efforts to support their incomes.

According to the announcement, the benefits will be provided at a rate of 10 percent for grades 1 to 9, and 15 percent for grades 10 to 20.

This information was provided in a notification from the Finance Department of the Ministry of Finance. It also stated that the special benefit will be a minimum of 1,000 taka for employed persons and a minimum of 500 taka for pensioners. Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed proposed increasing special benefits for government employees in the budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 on Monday. In his budget speech yesterday, he said, "Considering that there has been no salary structure update since 2015, I am proposing to increase the amount of special benefits for government employees in this year's budget."

This special benefit will be effective for employees and (reinstated) pensioners working under the national pay scale in government-civil, autonomous, and state-owned institutions, banks, insurance companies, financial institutions, Border Guard Bangladesh, and the police force.

The benefit will also be available to persons on post-retirement leave, suspended employees (at 50 percent of their final basic pay), and some contractual appointees.

However, it will not apply to employees on unpaid leave or those who have surrendered their whole pension without restoration.
