Three people, including two women, were beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of drug dealing in the Kharibari area of Muradnagar upazila in Cumilla early on Thursday.
The incident occurred at Koroibari village in the Upazila's Bangra Bazar Thana around 9am on Thursday, according to Mahfuzur Rahman, chief of the local police station.
The dead have been identified as Roksana Akhtar Rubi, 55, her son Rasel Mia, 28, and her daughter Jonaki Akhtar, 22.
Another person was injured in the beating, but their identity has yet to be confirmed.
OC Mahfuzur said that locals claim Ruby has been involved in drug trafficking for a long time. Locals gathered and attacked her house at 9am, with those inside being beaten by the mob. Three of them died at the scene.
Police have been dispatched to the scene and details will be provided at a later time, the OC added.
Mohammad Nazer Ahamed Khan, superintendent of police, said that three bodies were recovered from the spot, while another injured person was rescued and sent to hospital.
He added that if anyone commits a crime, it must be reported to law enforcement. Those who take the law into their own hands will face legal action.
