Rice, chicken, vegetables get pricier

Prices of essential commodities like rice, chicken and vegetables have gone up in the capital exacerbating the condition of people with limited incomes.
The rice price has been high in the market for three weeks with wholesalers putting the blame on the mill owners. Many shoppers say they struggle to manage household expenses amid the rise in prices daily essentials after the Eid.

Over the past four weeks, different types of rice have become costlier by Tk 3 to Tk 6 per kg. Although prices of Sonali and broiler chickens declined last week, they increased again on Friday. The cost of chicken eggs has fallen slightly, but the price of vegetables remains consistently high, with some varieties becoming even more expensive.

During the visits of different kitchen markets in the capital, it was seen that Miniket rice, depending on type and quality, was priced between Tk 76 and Tk 85 per kg, up from Tk 76 to Tk 82 last week. High-quality Miniket was being sold at Tk 80 to Tk 85, compared to Tk 80 to Tk 82 a week earlier. Miniket, previously Tk 76 to Tk 78, rose to Tk 78 to Tk 80.

Swarna coarse rice remained at Tk 55-58, and Bri-28 and Bri-29 varieties held at Tk 60-62 per kg in the retail market. Vegetable prices have remained high after Eid. Potatoes now sell at Tk 25 per kg, up from Tk 20 before Eid. Local onion prices remain the same at Tk 55 to Tk 60 per kg.

Vegetables like yardlong beans, ridge gourds, bitter melons, pointed gourds, okra, and brinjals are selling for Tk 40 to Tk 80 per kg.
The price of eggs has slightly decreased. A dozen eggs now cost between Tk 110 and Tk 130, down from Tk 115 to Tk 130 last week.
