Introducing youngsters to climate change impacts stressed

Bangladesh is considered to be the eighth most vulnerable country to the impacts of climate change, with its children and youth among the most at risk from rising temperatures, frequent floods and extreme weather events. Keeping this context in view, it is essential that every citizen, especially the younger generation, understands what climate change is, how it could impact their life and what they can do to combat this. Integrating climate change into the education system is a crucial step toward developing informed, empowered, and proactive communities capable of responding to  challenges.

For this purpose, Bangladesh has launched the "Climate Smart Education Systems Initiative", an eighteen-month programme aimed at integrating climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability into the country's education system, according to a press release received from UNESCO on Thursday (10 July 2025).  The key focus of the initiative is to strengthen the capacity of education systems to mainstream climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability into sector plans, budgets, and strategies, and to improve cross-sectoral coordination on climate and environment related policies and programs.
