Sheikh Shadi Bhuiyan ,JUST Correspondent: To highlight Bangladesh’s growing reputation in education, research, and innovation worldwide, Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) organized 28 national conferences within just two months. These conferences inspired students from all departments to actively engage in innovation, technology, and research, setting a new benchmark in the country’s academic history.
Held from May 24 to July 22 this year, the conferences featured distinguished keynote speakers joining both in person and online from leading institutions across the USA, UK, France, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, India, and other countries. Students from various public and private universities including DU, KU, CU, KUET, KU and SUST also took part actively. More than 1,500 students presented posters on a wide range of innovation and research topics.
To develop world-class faculty and students, JUST has announced a plan to hold at least one national conference every two years in each department. Additionally, eight international conferences one from each faculty will be organized. JUST’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Mazid, shared plans to establish modern innovation centers that meet international standards, aiming to make the university self-reliant in research and innovation.
JUST has already received top recognition as the country’s leading science and technology university, ranking highly in the “Asia University Rankings 2025” by the UK-based Times Higher Education and the “Elsevier Ranking 2025” from the Netherlands. In the World University Rankings released on October 9, 2024, JUST secured the highest national position among science and technology universities. Impressively, JUST has held the top spot in the Elsevier rankings for four consecutive years since 2022.
Speaking about the conference carnival, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mazid expressed his gratitude to the university’s administration, faculty, students, and staff for successfully organizing the event. He explained that the main goal of holding at least one national conference per department was to encourage research and innovation among faculty and students. This led to the two-month-long conference carnival. He believes that increased research will drive innovation, which will benefit the country economically and help the university become financially independent. With more investment in research, students will shift from just seeking jobs to becoming researchers and entrepreneurs. This will help prevent brain drain and keep talented youth in the country.
He also highlighted the broader goals of the carnival: to develop students as skilled professionals and responsible citizens with strong social responsibility and humanitarian values; to strengthen JUST’s research capacity; to encourage student entrepreneurship; to raise awareness about higher education; and to improve communication skills. By bringing researchers, trainers, and students together under one roof to share knowledge, the conference carnival aims to prepare students to compete globally.
