Rajshahi University (RU) journalists formed a human chain and held a protest rally on Saturday near Senate Building's Paris Road, demanding justice for the brutal killing of Gazipur journalist Tuhin.
They also demanded the safety of journalists across the country. Protesting journalists warned that if justice is not ensured for Tuhin's murder and journalist safety is not guaranteed nationwide, they would launch more intense movements.
During this time, RU Press Club President Monir Hossain Mahin questioned the government's failure to protect journalists even after recent violent incidents. He said they were supposed to focus on investigative reporting, not stand in protest for a colleague's murder.
Addressing the interim government, he urged them to fulfill their responsibilities or step aside for those who can ensure public and journalist safety.
RU Press Club Vice President Syed Sakib called the killing unprecedented in its brutality and criticized the silence of the interim government's information adviser. He demanded a clear statement and swift justice, along with stronger safety measures for journalists, especially amid tensions surrounding the upcoming RUCSU election.
d, "We are not supposed to stand up for such demands, but we have to stand up here. Because so far, no justice has been served to all the journalists who have been killed or tortured. In the culture of lack of justice that has developed in our country, they have also assumed that killing journalists will not result in anything. If the state cannot come out of this culture of lack of justice, then such killings will continue to increase."
Around a hundred people, including campus-based journalists, participated in the demonstration.
