'Naobibi' Explores climate change and mysteries of the haor

A short film titled 'Naobibi' has been made on the beauty and mysteries of the haor region, devastated by climate change. Filming recently wrapped at various locations in Nikli and Karimganj, Kishoreganj. The story and screenplay are written by Shah Muhammad Mosahid, with direction by Mashiur Rahman Kayes and production by Mac Ripon.

Mahafuz Munna, who created a stir on the big screen with 'Ural', plays the lead role. Opposite him, Israt Jahan Pami stars as the enigmatic young woman Maya. Although this is her first appearance in fiction, Pami is already recognised as a singer both at home and abroad, and is a two-time Notun Kuri Award winner.

The film's cinematography is by Anand Sarkar. Other cast members include Shah Shanto as Fenuchcha and Shah Obaid Nehan as Shishu.

Speaking about the project, Munna said, "Since it is an independent film, we all had to work very hard as a team. I've been part of a few independent productions and I believe teamwork is essential for quality work. I truly found that spirit in Naobibi."

At its core, Naobibi is a thriller interweaving emotion, mystery and the harsh reality of climate change in the haor. The story follows a traveller who ventures into the wetlands and experiences the uncanny: one night, a fire suddenly ignites upon the water, and beyond the flames appears the mysterious Maya. In chasing her, the traveller becomes entangled in the haor's secrets. As the mystery unfolds, Maya is revealed not simply as a young woman, but as the very soul of the haor; embodying the deep tension between its nature, culture and people.

Director Kayes has informed the media that the film will be submitted to international film festivals once post-production is complete.
