Indian External Affairs Secretary Vikram Misri has said that India is prepared to work with any elected government in Bangladesh irrespectively, which comes to power with support from voters. Vikram Misri made this comment on Monday (06 October 2025) while exchanging views with the journalists belonging to Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) in the Indian External Affairs Ministry.
Vikram Misri said about the upcoming elections in Bangladesh "I would like to say categorically that India always supports smooth, free, fair and inclusive elections in Bangladesh. We look forward to sound polls in Bangladesh and we are ready to work with whatever party that comes to power through participatory elections".
Vikram Misri stated that the Indian government is eagerly waiting for the polls in Bangladesh and to cooperate with the government formed by the political parties that win elections with mandate from Bangladeshi voters.
It may be recalled that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted on 5 August 2024 and she has been in India since then. Sheikh Hasina and her party Awami League ruled Bangladesh for longer than 15 years. An interim government took oath on 8 August 2024. Later on Awami League was banned from holding political programs. Even Awami League's student front Bangladesh Chhatra League was also outlawed after Sheikh Hasina's downfall from power. Sheikh Hasina and her party leaders are facing allegations of enforced disappearances, human rights violations and genocide during the July Mass Uprising in 2024. Reportedly most of the absconding Awami League leaders have taken shelter in India.
In yesterday's meeting at the Indian External Affairs Ministry (IEAM), IEAM spokesperson Ranadheer Jayswal, Bangladesh and Myanmar Affairs Joint Secretary B Shyam, DCAB President AKM Main Uddin and General Secretary Arifuzzaman Mamun were present among some other dignitaries.
