Hilsa conservation in Chandpur: Coast guard launches public awareness program

Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) have launched public awareness program in Chandpur to preserve the Hilsa fish.

Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque, media officer at coast guard headquarters, confirmed the matter on Tuesday.

He said, "Since the inception, Bangladesh Coast Guard have been conducting extensive surveillance in rivers and marine water through drones to protect mother Hilsha to ensure safe breeding during its peak breeding period. Recently, fishing by artisanal trawling boats has been destroying marine biodiversity, disrupting fish reproduction, destroying marine plants and fish, and disrupting the balance of the ecosystem, which is creating a threat of fish depletion in the Bay of Bengal in the future. As continuous campaigns are underway against illegal artisanal trawling boats, their use has largely decreased, which will increase the abundance of fish in the sea and rivers."

"The surveillance through drones alongside the regular drives and patrols that began on October 3 midnight will continue until October 25 midnight as per the government order", he said.

In addition, the coast guard is always ready to provide immediate via emergency service number 16111.
