At least ten people, including women and children, were injured when a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a roadside ditch on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in Narayanganj’s Bandar upazila on Thursday afternoon.
The accident occurred in the Bandar Malibagh Jangal area around 4:00 pm. Locals rushed to the scene immediately after the incident and rescued the injured passengers, who were later taken to nearby clinics for treatment.
According to police, the bus of Doel Paribahan was heading to Dhaka from Sonargaon when its driver lost control, causing the vehicle to fall into a water-filled ditch.
Awlad Hossain, Sub-Inspector of Kanchpur Highway Police Outpost, said, “The bus lost control and plunged into the ditch, leaving several passengers injured. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far.”
He added that members of the Fire Service joined the rescue operation soon after the incident. “We are checking whether anyone remains trapped inside the bus,” he said.
Locals suspect that excessive speed caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Traffic movement on the highway was temporarily disrupted following the accident but later returned to normal with the help of police and residents.
Police said efforts were underway to recover the damaged bus and an investigation into the accident has been launched. Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
