Speed skater Nabiyun clinches double gold in China

After seven long years, Bangladesh Roller Skating Federation brought great success by participating in an international speed skating event. The architect of this success is Bogura's hero Nabiyun Islam, who lone clinched two gold medals.

Bangladeshi skaters broke a 30-year-old record by winning a total of four medals, including two gold medals in the 'Belt and Road China-ASEAN Speed Roller Skating City Invitational Tournament' held in Karamai city of Xinjiang state, China.

Organised under the supervision of World Asia Skating and China Roller Skating Federation, Nabiyun Islam's performance in the competition was incredible.

Through this success, which was written on October 11 and 12, a great chapter was added to the history of Bangladesh Roller Skating Federation. Competing in the junior-A group, Nabiyun won a pair of gold medals by winning first place in the 500-meter speed race on the first day and the 1000-meter sprint race on the second day.

This is the first time in the 30-year history of Bangladesh roller skating that a Bengali boy has won two gold medals at once, competing among more than three hundred skaters from 17 countries in the Asian continent. This is Bangladesh's highest achievement in an international roller skating event in the last 30 years. Bangladesh Roller Skating Federation General Secretary Md. Lutfar Rahman expressed his excitement and said, "Nabiyun Islam performed with incredible skill in the Belt and Road Asian Roller Skating Competition in China. This victory is not only a milestone in Bangladesh, but also in the history of roller skating in Asia." In addition to Nabiyun's pair of gold medals, Atahar Shihab Adit, who participated for the Bangladesh team, won two more silver medals.

Nabiyun, who practices for the Bogura Roller Skating Club, is the eldest son of the club's founder and coach Ashraful Islam Rohit.

Before entering the international stage, he won silver medals in two national events and became the champion at the upazila and district levels in rope skipping this year.

Proud of his son's historic success, his father and coach Ashraful Islam Rohit said, "It is a huge achievement for a Bengali boy to win two gold medals in 30 years of history by competing among 17 Asian countries. I pray that he goes further."

The 10-member Bangladesh team left for China on October 8. The team's players are Akif Hamid, Munjir Afnan Biswas, Atahar Shihab Adit, Zarif Ahmed Sarkar, Falisha Ruzbeh, Afraz Bin Arif and Nabiyun Islam Prithivi.
