Two Advisers in the interim government were told to resign in mid September by high-ups reportedly. Both these Advisers represent students who participated in the July Uprising in 2024. These two Advisers are Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuz Alam and Local Government and Rural Development Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan. Reliable bureaucratic sources have stated that some senior Advisers wanted these two young cabinet members to step down.
Reportedly Mahfuz Alam wants to retain his Adviser post even during the elections. Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan might resign ahead of the elections. However, no such decisions have been yet finalized.
Comments on this speculation from these two young Advisers could not be obtained. Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan told reporters on 14 August 2025 that he would resign before the election schedule is announced. Mahfuz Alam said on 28 September 2025 that he cannot say for sure whether he would resign or not before elections.
It may be recalled that the interim government took oath on 8 August 2024 following ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's escape to India on 5 August 2024. Nobel Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus became the Chief Adviser. Currently National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam was an Adviser in the first cabinet of the interim government but Nahid Islam stepped down on 25 February 2025. NCP mainly comprises youths who lead and carried out the July Revolution in 2024. Mahfuz Alam became an Adviser on 10 November 2024.
Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan is heading the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the LGRD Ministry both as Adviser.
The upcoming elections are supposed to be held in February 2026. Election schedule is expected to be announced in December 2025. Both NCP and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have urged the interim government to remove politically biased Advisers from the cabinet immediately.
Jamaat Nayeb-E-Amir Dr. Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher has meanwhile complained that some Advisers are involved in plotting conspiracies against the essence and vision of the July Uprising.
Author and researcher Mohiuddin Ahmed has told journalists that the allegations which have glared up about certain Advisers are harmful for the interim government. These allegations can generate suspicion in people's minds about the motives and roles of the interim government, Mohiuddin Ahmed stated. He called upon the Chief Adviser to deal with these points boldly.
