Four people were killed and five others injured when a battery-run auto-rickshaw and a covered van collided head-on in the Digpait area of Jamalpur Sadar upazila on Monday. The deceased were identified as Chan Mia (65), college student Arifa Khatun Poli (28), Rashed Mia (30), and an unidentified woman. Nazmus Sakib, officer-in-charge of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station confirmed it. The accident took place around 1:00pm on Monday (October 27) on the Tangail-Jamalpur regional highway in Digpait. 
Of the deceased, Chan Mia was the son of Moyez Uddin of Narayanpur village in Titpalla union under Jamalpur Sadar upazila; Rashed Mia was the son of Haidar Ali of Sanakur village in Mahadan union of Sarishabari upazila; and Arifa Khatun Poli, wife of Sharif Ahmed of Uchchagram village in the same union, was a student of Jamalpur Government Ashek Mahmud College. The identity of the other deceased woman could not be known immediately. The injured were identified as Chan Mia's wife, Shundha Begum (50); Jahangir Alam (40), son of Toyez Ali of the same area; Sadika Akter (25), daughter of Chan Mia of Digpait; Farzana Begum (22), daughter of Badsha Mia of the same area; and Arsh (5), son of Sharif Ahmed of Uchchagram. Arsh is the son of the deceased Arifa Khatun Poli. Among the injured, Arsh, Sadika Akter, and Shundha Begum were later sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment as their conditions were critical.
Witnesses said the Tangail-bound covered van from Jamalpur collided head-on with the Jamalpur town-bound battery-run auto-rickshaw in Digpait. Rashed Mia died on the spot, while seven others sustained severe injuries. Locals rescued the injured and took them to Jamalpur General Hospital, where doctors declared Arifa Khatun Poli dead. Later, Chan Mia succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Jahangir Alam and Farzana Begum are currently undergoing treatment at Jamalpur General Hospital.
Nazmus Sakib, officer-in-charge of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station, said, "Four people were killed in the road accident, including one unidentified woman. The covered van has been seized. No complaint has been filed yet, but legal action will be taken if any is lodged."
