Surge in diarrhoea cases in Mohanganj

Mohanganj upazila has been struggling with an outbreak of diarrhoea with 193 new patients hospitalised across the upazila in last month.

Most of the admitted patients are children from different unions of the haor. Relatives of the patients who came to the hospital complained that they are not getting adequate services in the hospital. Saline and medicines have to be bought from outside. Meanwhile, the hospital authorities believe that the incidence of diarrhea is increasing due to water-borne diseases.

It has been learnt that some 193 people were admitted to Mohanganj Upazila Health Complex due to diarrhea in the current month of October. On an average, 7 patients with diarrhea are being admitted every day. Of these, 8 patients with diarrhea were admitted till Tuesday (October 28) noon. Doctors and nurses are struggling to treat patients suffering from diarrhea due to the pressure.

During a ground visit on Tuesday afternoon, it is seen that patients suffering from diarrhea were admitted across the male and female wards. In addition, due to lack of space, the admitted patients were also kept on the floor of the corridor outside the ward with saline.

While speaking to Masum, a diarrhea patient, (30), he said, "I admitted to the hospital two days ago due to diarrhea. Now I see only diarrhea patients in the entire hospital."

Hospital statistician Mushfiqur Rahman Bakul said that so far in October, 193 people have been treated at the hospital for diarrhea. However, the statistician admitted that there is a shortage of saline and medicine. When the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Alok Kanti Talukder was called on his mobile phone in this regard, he did not answer the phone and turned off the phone.

Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Momenul Islam said, "The number of patients suffering from diarrhea has been on the rise for the last few days."
