SC stays HC bail to Selina Hayat Ivy in 5 cases

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday stayed a High Court order that granted bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in five separate cases.

Supreme Court Judge-in-Chamber Justice Md Rezaul Haque passed the order and forwarded the matter to the Appellate Division regular bench for further hearing on November 17.

"Stay, surrender and fixed on November 17," said the short order passed by the Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court. The apex court came up with the order after holding a hearing on a state appeal against the High Court order.

Senior Advocate Sara Hossain and Advocate Motahar Hossain Saju argued for Ivy, while Additional Attorney General Barrister Aneek R Haque stood for the state.

A High Court Division Bench of Justice ASM Abdul Mobin and Justice Md Sagir Hossain passed the order on November 9, declaring absolute a rule it had issued earlier.

Dr Selina Hayat Ivy was detained from his Narayanganj Deovog house on May 9, 2025, and was later shown arrested in three murder cases and two attempt to murder cases. Selina Hayat Ivy, who is in prison, had been granted bail by the High Court on 9 November in five separate cases, including charges of murder and grievous bodily harm related to the anti-discrimination movement.
