Supporters of a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader who was denied nomination have taken to the streets in Naogaon, blocking a major road to demand a change in the candidate chosen for the Naogaon-1 constituency.
The demonstration took place on Monday at Mach Chhattar in Mohadevpur Upazila in the district, where followers of Mohadevpur Upazila BNP President Robiul Alam Bullet staged the protest.
The protesters demanded the cancellation of the nomination of Fazle Huda Babul, the party's nominated candidate for the Naogaon-3 (Mahadevpur-Badalgachi Upazila) constituency.
The rally was presided over by Thana BNP Senior Vice-President Jaharul Islam. mThana BNP General Secretary Abdul Matin, Organizing Secretaries Sajjad Hossain and Abdul Hannan, Mahadevpur Sadar Union BNP President Abdul Mannan Chowdhury Dulal, Hatun Union BNP President Abdul Gafur, Khajur Union BNP President Badal Biswas and Safapur Union BNP President and UP Chairman Shamsul Alam and others. Several thousands of leaders and activists of Mahadevpur and Badalgachhi upazilas and their affiliates were present at the event.Speakers at the program said, "Robiul Alam Bullet was by the side of the leaders and activists in all the movements in this constituency in the past days."
They warned that they would continue their movement if the party did not reconsider its decision and nominate Robiul Alam Bullet for the seat.
Speaking the occasion, Robiul Alam Bullet said, "We have never left the party. We have devoted ourselves to the party after enduring injustice and persecution for the past 17 years. Those who want to distort the assured victory of BNP will be resisted."
