UK renews call to end gender violence: Envoy
British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke on Tuesday reaffirmed her country's strong commitment to help end gender-based violence in Bangladesh as elsewhere in the world.
"Gender-based violence is a global challenge, but together we can end it. The UK stands with its partners worldwide, taking action both locally and globally to create a safer, fairer future where every woman and girl lives free from violence," she said in message shared by the British high commission in Dhaka.
The comments came as world marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The day also marked the launching of the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness, strengthening
prevention, and
demanding accountability for violence against women and girls.
As part of its international commitments, the UK has been supporting programs on women's empowerment,
protection services, safe workplaces, digital safety, and community-based prevention initiatives aimed at reducing
vulnerabilities.
Canadian High Commission, meanwhile, also issued a statement ahead of the 16-day
campaign, reiterating that child, early and forced marriage is a form of violence.
Canada reiterated its commitment to prevent all forms of gender-based violence, including technology-facilitated gender violence, abuse and harmful practices.
The global campaign, observed from November 25 to December 10, calls on governments, development partners, and communities to intensify coordinated efforts to eliminate violence against women in all its forms.
