Jailed AL leader Proloy Chakee dies

Proloy Chakee, who was a famed singer and an Awami League leader, died of a cardiac arrest on Sunday (11 January 2026) while undergoing medical treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Proloy Chakee was jailed in connection with a case over the Anti-Discriminatory Students' Movement. He was Pabna District Awami League's Cultural Affairs Secretary.

Pabna Jail Super Md. Omar Faruk confirmed the above information. Reliable sources have stated that Proloy Chakee was arrested by Detective Branch (DB) police personnel on 16 December 2025. He lived at Pathortola area in Pabna town.

Proloy Chakee suddenly became sick with chest pain on Friday (9 January 2026) and he was admitted in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital quickly. He breathed his last two days later.

Pabna District Jail Super Md. Omar Faruk told journalists that Proloy Chakee was suffering from different ailments including diabetes. He was first placed in Pabna General Hospital. Proloy Chakee was soon shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where he died.Proloy Chakee's son Sunny Chakee has complained that his father was confined inside prison cell instead of admitting him in Coronary Care Unit (CCU). Sunny Chakee's allegations show that Proloy Chakee died because of negligence from the prison authorities. However, Jail Super Omar Faruk declined these allegations.

Proloy Chakee's elder brother Moloy Chakee told reporters that celebrated singers including Tapan Chowdhury, Kumar Bishwajit, Dinat Jahan Munni, Bappa Majumder and Kabir Bakul expressed deep condolences over Proloy Chakee's demise.
