Action against Rumeen Farhana sought

Actions have been sought against Barrister Rumeen Farhana, an independent candidate from Brahmanbaria-2 constituency in the upcoming 13th parliamentary election, accusing her of violating the electoral code of conduct and creating a 'mob' while misbehaving with an executive magistrate of a mobile court in Brahmanbaria.

Assistant Returning Officer and Sarail Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Abubakor Sarkar sent a letter to the Election Inquiry and Judicial Committee and Senior Civil Judge Ashraful Islam on Saturday (17 January).

Violating the electoral code of conduct, expelled BNP leader Rumeen Farhana organised a large gathering with a pandal in Islamabad (Gogad) area of Noagaon union under Sarail upazila. The mobile court dispersed the rally and fined Rumeen's supporter Jewel Mia Tk 40,000.

At the time, Rumeen allegedly aggressively behaved with Executive Magistrate Shahria Hasan Khan showing thumb to him. The letter further alleges that Jewel Mia and others accompanying Rumeen behaved aggressively, creating a mob that obstructed judicial proceedings and threatened the magistrate, constituting a clear violation of electoral rules.

A link to the video circulating on social media was also included in the letter. The video shows Rumeen Farhana confronting the magistrate, saying, "Excuse me sir… this is the last time I'm warning you. I will not listen to this."

She later addressed the audience, saying, "I listened today. I raised my finger and made it clear that I won't listen again. If I don't say so, you won't be able to leave from here. Remember that. I am Rumeen Farhana -- I don't need any party." The video also shows Rumeen Farhana making an offensive gesture with her thumb. Her personal assistant, Zakir Hossain Shuvo, was also accused of behaving inappropriately with the magistrate.

Executive Magistrate Shahria Hasan Khan said the rally violated Rule 18 of the election code of conduct.

According to Section 18 of the Code of Conduct for Political Parties and Candidates in Parliamentary Elections Rule, 2025, the electioneering can be conducted from three weeks before the polling day until 48 hours prior to the start of voting, subject to compliance with the prescribed conditions.

BNP expelled Barrister Rumeen Farhana from all party posts at every level, including her primary membership, based on specific allegations of carrying out organizational activities in defiance of party decisions.
