Md Sarwar to serve as interim DMP Commissioner

Additional Commissioner (Admin) Md Sarwar will serve as the interim Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) until further notice is issued.
A gazette notification to this effect was issued by the Bangladesh Police headquarters on Thursday.

According to the notification, Md Sarwar will carry out the responsibilities of DMP commissioner with immediate effect, in addition to his current duties, until a regular commissioner assumes the post.

The directive from the Police Headquarters comes just one day after the resignation of the previous Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali. In the resignation letter, SM Sazzat Ali cited 'personal and family' reasons although his tenure was scheduled to continue until November this year.

Sazzat, an officer of the 1984 batch of the BCS Police cadre, had been dismissed from service in November 2016 while serving as additional inspector general of police at the Police Headquarters during the tenure of the previous Awami League government.

On 20 November 2024, the interim government appointed him as the DMP chief on a two-year contract.

Md Sarwar currently holds the rank of supernumerary additional inspector general of police (IGP).

The decision to appoint Sarwar as the interim DMP chief was made by the newly appointed IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir, who took command of the force on Wednesday.
