BAT Bangladesh Gears Up for AWS Surveillance Audit

BAT Bangladesh Gears Up for AWS Surveillance Audit
Reverse Osmosis Technology at Green Leaf Threshing Plant, Kushtia

BAT Bangladesh is preparing for its Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) surveillance audit following water stewardship milestones achieved across its Kushtia Green Leaf Threshing Plant (GLTP) and Manikganj Redrying Plant (RDP).In June 2025, the Kushtia GLTP secured re-certification under the AWS Core Certification. These achievements marked an important step in strengthening site level water governance and operational performance across BAT Bangladesh’s leaf operations.

Water Stewardship Performance – Kushtia GLTP

At the Kushtia GLTP established water-governance structures remained in place throughout 2025,supported by dedicated stewardship leadership and annual oversight from senior management. The site continued to engage with local government authorities   and community stakeholders, regularly sharing updates on the implementation of its water-stewardship plan.

In 2025, the facility recorded total water withdrawals of 42,021 cubic metres. Water use efficiency improved, with water use intensity declining by 5 per cent compared to the previous year. These improvements were driven by system efficiency upgrades and enhanced water network management.

The site recycled 823.92 cubic metres of water during 2025. Additional efficiency measures—including improved condensate recovery and steam valve jacketing, reduced total water losses to 1.37 per cent, down from 1.54 per cent in the previous year. Water-quality compliance was maintained throughout the year, with effluent discharges meeting applicable regulatory requirements under the Environmental Conservation Rules. No adverse impacts were recorded on nearby important water-related areas and no water -related violations were reported.

Water Stewardship Performance – Manikganj RDP

The Manikganj RDP facility also demonstrated   progress during its certification year. Governance accuracy improved following the installation of two dedicated flowmeters, enabling fully meter-based monitoring of water withdrawals and consumption.

During 2025, the site recycled 823.92 cubic metres of water. Efficiency measures, including improved condensate recovery and steam-valve jacketing, reduced total water losses to 1.37 per cent from 1.54 per cent the previous year.

The facility also initiated work on a new sewage treatment plant intended to strengthen future compliance capacity. No adverse impacts were recorded on nearby important water-related areas.

Shared water challenges affecting both sites include pressure on groundwater resources, pollution risks and gaps in wider catchment governance. BAT Bangladesh said it continues to publicly communicate these issues and engage with local stakeholders to strengthen resilience in surrounding catchments.

Compliance, Transparency and Ongoing Commitment

Throughout the reporting period, both the Kushtia GLTP and Manikganj RDP facilities maintained transparent compliance records with no reported water-related violations. Access to relevant water stewardship information for stakeholders continues to be ensured in line with AWS requirements.

Water, sanitation and hygiene services aligned with AWS requirements remain in place at both plants. Additional upgrades are planned at the Manikganj facility under the company’s Project Ironclad initiative, scheduled to begin in February 2026.

With measurable improvements, in water -use efficiency, strengthened governance frameworks and continued public disclosure, BAT Bangladesh is entering its AWS surveillance audit demonstrating a continued commitment to responsible water stewardship across its Kushtia–Manikganj operational corridor.
