Nilsagar Express train derailed in Bogura, At least 66passengers have been injured.
Many sustaining injuries after jumping from the overcrowded train roof inpanic, railway authorities said.
A railways ministry statement on Wednesday night said 20 ofthe injured were admitted to Naogaon Sadar Hospital, while 40 were releasedafter primary treatment.
It added that six others were treated and discharged fromAdamdighi Upazila Health Complex.
Santahar Station Master Khadija Khanam said: “The accidentoccurred about 1.5 kilometres from the station. The train had 13 coaches, nineof which derailed.
“Each coach carried around 62 passengers. Due to Eid, therewere extra passengers inside, and many were on the roof. Those who jumped fromthe roof were mostly the ones injured.”
Witnesses described chaotic scenes.
One local said: “Many passengers were on the roof. Somejumped, others could not get down. We brought down around 100 people usingladders. One man’s leg was severed after he jumped in panic. There was a lot ofscreaming.”
The train, carrying Eid travellers from Dhaka to Chilahati,left at 6:45am and derailed near Bagmara after departing Santahar around 2pm.
Relief trains from Ishwardi and Parbatipur began operationsaround 7:45pm, with clearance expected to “take hours”.
Rail links to northern districts remained suspended,prompting emergency transfer arrangements for stranded passengers.
