10-bed measles isolation unit opens at Osmani Medical College Hospital

Due to the outbreak of measles in Sylhet, a 10- bed isolation unit has been opened at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Earlier, the Health Department had declared Ward No. 4 of Sylhet Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital as an isolation unit and was providing treatment since March 26. Currently, 62 children and adolescents are admitted there with measles symptoms.

Brigadier General Umar Rashed Munir, director of the hospital, said that a new 10-bed isolation center has been opened due to the recent increase in measles infection among the children.

This special initiative has been taken so that the affected patients can be kept separate and given proper treatment, he added.

He said the introduction of the isolation unit will help control the infection and ensure the safety of other patients.

In addition, doctors and nurses have been given special responsibility for intensive monitoring of patients and providing necessary treatment, he added. Meanwhile, a four-month old baby died at Osmani Medical College Hospital on Monday afternoon with symptoms of measles.

The child named Farhan died from bronchopneumonia and a lung infection, complicated by cardiac arrest also, said hospital's Deputy Director Dr Mahbubur Rahman. He said the child died at around 1 pm with symptoms of measles. Once the lab test report is received, it will be confirmed whether it is measles or not, he added.

Meanwhile, the health department report said that a total of 101 people are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals in Sylhet division with symptoms of measles and rubella.
