EU has strong affiliation with Bangladesh over migration issues

The European Union or EU is fully engaged in Bangladesh regarding migration matters.

At the consultation for the International Migration Review Forum 2026, the European Union - represented by Jurate Smalskyte Merville, Councillor at the EU Delegation - recognized Bangladesh's progress in terms of digital systems and policies, notably the criminalization of migrant smuggling.

The EU officials exchanged views with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed about the relevant points.

However, too many migrants still face high costs, informal brokers and unsafe journeys. The EU-Bangladesh migration partnership is working to reduce irregular migration, expand legal pathways, strengthen return and reintegration, and tackle trafficking and smuggling. So that migration remains safe, fair and dignified.

The EU officials thanked Shama Obaed for sharing with them her valuable time.
