Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has approved significant increases in salaries and match fees for domestic cricketers, shortly after assuming leadership of a newly formed ad-hoc committee of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

The move comes after the National Sports Council dissolved the previous committee led by Aminul Islam Bulbul and appointed Tamim to head the board for a three-month term.

At his second board meeting on Wednesday, just a day after taking charge, Tamim oversaw revisions to both men's and women's domestic cricket pay structures. This marks the first such increase since 2023.

Under the new structure for women's cricketers, match fees in limited-overs formats have nearly doubled. Players will now earn Tk 10,000 per T20 match and Tk 15,000 per ODI game, up from Tk 5,000 previously. The fee for longer-format matches has been set at Tk 20,000.

In women's domestic cricket, the number of contracted players has risen to 35. Monthly salaries have increased from Tk 30,000 to Tk 40,000.

For men's domestic cricket, the number of contracted players has increased slightly to 102 from 100 last year. Salaries have seen substantial hikes across categories.

Category 'A' players will now receive Tk 65,000 per month (up from Tk 28,750), 'B' players Tk 50,000 (up from Tk 23,000) and 'C' players Tk 40,000 (up from Tk 17,250).

Match fees in men's first-class cricket have also been raised, with players now earning Tk 100,000 per match, compared to Tk 70,000 previously.

Explaining the decision, Tamim said domestic cricketers had long been underpaid regardless of their efforts. He added that the revised salary structure would be effective retroactively from January, despite being introduced in April.

Earlier on Tuesday after his first board meeting, Tamim pledged to restore the image of the country's cricket and conduct free and fair elections within the stipulated timeframe.

The National Sports Council (NSC) recently dissolved the previous BCB board led by Aminul Islam Bulbul and formed an 11-member ad-hoc committee headed by Tamim to oversee operations and organize elections within three months.

After formally taking charge, Tamim chaired the committee's first meeting, attended by six members in person and five virtually.

"Whenever someone takes responsibility here, they often talk about development and various initiatives. But for us, the priority is clear and we must restore the image of Bangladesh cricket," Tamim said.

He acknowledged that the reputation of the sport in the country has suffered in the past years and stressed the need for collective efforts to rebuild trust.

"We all believe that cricket's image has been ruined. Fixing that is our most important task," he added.

The former national captain also emphasized the committee's commitment to ensuring a transparent electoral process.

"We have been entrusted with organizing a fair and impartial election within three months. We will carry out this responsibility honestly and as quickly as possible," he remarked.

Alongside preparing for the election, the committee will continue managing the board's regular activities, including preparations related to upcoming international commitments such as the World Cup.

Tamim noted that criticism and scrutiny are inevitable but necessary in the process of rebuilding.

"There will be criticism, discussions about our performance which is normal. But no one wants Bangladesh cricket to remain in its current state," he said.

Meanwhile, committee member Tanzil Chowdhury has been appointed as the BCB spokesperson and will brief the media on all official decisions.
