My father is now relieved, says deceased Ziaul Haque's son

SM Ziaul Haque Zia, a local Awami League leader in Jamalpur, died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on Tuesday night while in jail custody.

According to his family, Zia, a member of the advisory council of Jamalpur district Awami League, also served as adviser to Digpait union Awami League in Sadar upazila. He was president of the managing committee of Digpait DK High School.

Mohammad Shafiul Alam, superintendent of Jamalpur district jail, said Zia had been in custody since January 15 in connection with a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

On Tuesday, special meals were served in the jail marking Pahela Baishakh. Zia fell ill shortly after lunch around 1:00pm, the jail official said.

He was first taken to Jamalpur General Hospital around 2:00pm. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

On the other hand, deceased SM Ziaul Haque's son Zakiur Rafid Nafi posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday "My father is now relieved. He has gone above everything. He no longer has to wait anxiously for his release from prison".

This emotionally driven social media post has shocked thousands of netizens.
