Bangladesh's only state-owned Di-Ammonia Phosphate (DAP) fertilizer factory has closed down after the factory ran out of its ammonia reserves. The factory's Manager (Administration) Alamgir Jalil confirmed the closure of fertilizer production in the factory on Saturday.

Relevant sources have informed that production of urea and ammonia came to a halt in Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Company Limited (CUFL) and Karnaphuly Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO) on 4 March 2026 due to extreme shortage of gas supply. The DAP fertilizer factory was severely hammered by the stoppage of gas supply from KAFCO and CUFL. Crisis of raw materials is another reason behind the shutdown of the DAP fertilizer factory.

The DAP fertilizer factory has been playing a huge role in Bangladesh's agricultural sector since 2006. It operates under Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC). The DAP factory had the capability of producing 800 metric tons of fertilizers everyday. Under these circumstances, worries about the production of agricultural goods in days to come have deepened.
