A colorful program was organised Sunday at the National Sports Council auditorium in the capital to provide professional recognition to national athletes.
At the program, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. AminulHaque handed over 'Sports Cards' to 171 more athletes as a memento of professional recognition. Earlier, on March 30, 129 people were given these cards in the first phase. So far, a total of 300 athletes have come under this special benefit. The government has set a target of providing these cards to a total of 500 national athletes in phases.
In his speech as the chief guest, State Minister Md. AminulHaque said that the main objective of the government is to establish sports as a permanent and prestigious profession. Every player holding the card will be brought under special insurance benefits and they will receive medical care on a priority basis in case of any injury during their performance on the field or in their personal life. In addition, to maintain the quality of the players, their performance will be evaluated every four months and transparency will be ensured by regularly updating the list based on that evaluation.
He said that from the next academic year, sports are being made mandatory as a compulsory subject in the curriculum from the fourth grade. From now on, students will have to pass sports along with general subjects. A policy decision has been taken to quickly appoint sports teachers in the country's educational institutions to produce skilled players at the grassroots level.
The ministry has decided to prioritize the country's experienced former players in this recruitment process and utilize their experience.
