A growing fuel crisis is threatening to shut down the Bandar Central ferry ghat in Narayanganj, raising concerns over severe disruption for daily commuters. Located on the Shitalakshya River, the ghat is a vital link between Narayanganj city and Bandar upazila. Thousands of people rely on it every day for work and essential travel.
The ghat operates with boats and trawlers leased by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, carrying around 30,000 passengers daily by trawler alone, according to the leaseholder.
Leaseholder Didar Khandakar said fuel supply has remained disrupted for the past month, forcing operators to buy diesel at higher prices. "We are facing a serious shortage. With the current stock, operations may continue only until Saturday noon," he said.
Seven trawlers run daily from early morning to late night, requiring about 130-135 litres of diesel. If new supplies are not secured, ferry services may be suspended. Passengers said the ferry is the most affordable option, with fares as low as Tk 2 per person, and warned that a shutdown would increase travel costs significantly.
Bandar Upazila Executive Officer Shibani Sarkar said an emergency supply of 100 litres of diesel has been arranged temporarily. She added that a long-term solution will be pursued in coordination with the authorities.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Mustafizur Rahman of BIWTA said necessary steps will be taken once the issue is formally communicated.
Authorities are urged to act quickly to prevent disruption to this essential transport route.
