Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) on Monday organised a university central seminar titled "World Hormone Day 2026" at its A Block Auditorium, highlighting the need to maintain proper hormonal balance in the human body, raise awareness about the wide-ranging effects of hormones, and emphasise the diagnosis and treatment of complex hormone-related diseases.
The seminar was organised by the Central Seminar Sub-Committee on Monday, 20 April 2026. At the event, Professor Dr Sharmin Jahan of the Department of Endocrinology presented a paper titled "Endocrine Gems: Lessons from Most Challenging Cases", where she offered guidance on the diagnosis of various complex endocrine disorders.
Associate Professor Dr Nusrat Sultana of the same department, in her presentation "Hormone Matters: Endocrine Health Across the Life Span", said hormones are essential at every stage of life. She said proper hormonal balance is necessary for growth, intelligence, metabolism, reproduction and the smooth functioning of the body.
She added that if hormonal balance is disrupted, normal physiological functions cannot operate properly. She identified diabetes, thyroid disorders, growth-related problems, infertility and various problems during puberty as major hormone-related conditions. She said ensuring proper hormonal balance is essential for a healthy life and disease prevention.
Speaking as chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr F M Siddiqui said hormones have a profound effect on different systems and organs of the human body and that many diseases are significantly influenced by them. He said doctors have to deal with such issues in everyday clinical practice and stressed the need for both the public and physicians to gain more knowledge and awareness about hormones.
The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr Afzalun Nesar, chairman of the Department of Virology and president of the University Central Seminar Sub-Committee, and moderated by Assistant Professor Dr Khaled Mahabub Murshed (Mamun) of the Department of Medicine.
Special guests included Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Hawlader, Treasurer Professor Dr Nahreen Akhtar and Registrar Professor Dr Md Nazrul Islam.
The speakers said hormones have a wide-ranging impact on the human body and that a healthy lifestyle is essential to maintain hormonal balance. They also stressed the need for early diagnosis and proper treatment of hormone-related diseases.
They said hormones influence the human body and life from birth until death, and there is no alternative to maintaining hormonal balance to ensure proper bodily functions. Among others present at the seminar were Dean Professor Dr Shamim Ahmed, Dean Professor Dr M Abu Hena Chowdhury, Chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology Professor Dr Syed Akram Hossain, Chairman of the Department of Neonatology Professor Dr Md Abdul Mannan.
