Jailed mom begs for her infant's life

Jubo Mohila League leader Shilpi Begum has been sent to jail over an attempted murder case connected with Dhaka University student Tahmid Mubin Ratul dating back to the July Uprising in 2024. Shilpi Begum was crying and begging for her one month and a half old baby girl who was also placed in prison.

A hearing over the above case was held in the court of Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junaid, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka when Shilpi Begum's bail petition was declined. Shilpi Begum was arrested from the capital's Tejkunipara Railway Colony on Monday evening.

Sub Inspector of Tejgaon Police Station Sheikh Nazrul Islam produced Shilpi Begum and her child before the court and applied to the judge to keep Shilpi Begum detained inside jail. Shilpi Begum is accused of attempting to subdue the July Uprising in 2024. Shilpi Begum's family members were present at the court on Tuesday while the hearing on the case was going on at around 2 pm.

Shilpi Begum's lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi requested the court for her client's bail. She informed the court that Shilpi Begum's daughter was born on 4 March 2026. Shilpi Begum also broke one of her hands slipping off the bathroom floor, her lawyer said during the hearing.

Shilpi Begum broke into tears when her bail petition was rejected. She suckled her baby while crying restlessly. Shilpi Begum was later on shifted to Kashimpur Prison with her baby.

Eminent jurist Dr. Shah Deen Malik said "Humanity is no less important than law or jurisdiction. Showing compassion to innocent infants is indispensable for upholding the basic principles of legal procedures."

Retired Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nurul Huda said that there are certain provisions in litigation proceedings for the safety and sustenance of underage children with accused individuals. He called upon authorities concerned to deal with minor youngsters gently and sympathetically.
