A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) and China’s Kunming Medical University with the goal of establishing a Joint Surgical Clinic. On this occasion, a ceremony was held on Wednesday at the lecture hall of BMU Super Specialized Hospital.
The event was graced by Honorable Minister for Health, Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain, MP, as the Chief Guest. Special Guests included H.E. Mr. Yao Wen, Ambassador of China to Bangladesh; Professor Dr. Prabhat Chandra Biswas, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services; and Professor Dr. Nazmul Hossain, Director General of Medical Education Division.
The program was presided over by Professor Dr. A.F.M. Siddiqui, Vice-Chancellor of BMU. The event was moderated by Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic). Among others who addressed the gathering were Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration); Professor Dr. Md. Ibrahim Siddique, Dean of the Faculty of Surgery; Professor Li Jiongming, Professor of Urology at Kunming Medical University; Professor Li Wenliang, Director of Kunming Medical University; and Professor He Yongwen, Vice President of Kunming Medical University. The vote of thanks was delivered by Professor Dr. Md. Saiful Islam of the Department of Urology.
The ceremony was also attended by Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research & Development); Professor Dr. Nahreen Akhtar, Treasurer; Professor Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal, Registrar; Professor Dr. Saif Ullah Munshi, Director of Super Specialized Hospital; Dr. Saif Uddin Nisar Ahmed, Additional Registrar; Dr. Mahbubul Islam Khondaker, Deputy Director of Super Specialized Hospital, along with distinguished deans, chairpersons, faculty members, and officials of the university.
In his speech, the Honorable Health Minister sought China’s cooperation in strengthening Bangladesh’s healthcare sector, particularly in improving medical services at the rural level. He stated that the event reflected the long-standing friendship between the two countries and thanked the Government of China and the hospital authorities for signing this important MoU with Bangladesh Medical University.
He emphasized that expanding healthcare services and medical education is a major responsibility, adding that China has achieved remarkable advancement in these sectors. He described the agreement as a significant milestone and expressed interest in expanding such exchanges to other medical colleges in both countries. The Minister further said that the initiative marks the beginning of a Joint Surgical Clinic between BMU and Kunming Medical University.
He described it as not merely a partnership between two institutions, but a shared vision to advance healthcare, medical education, and surgical excellence beyond borders.
Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen said that China and Bangladesh have always supported each other, especially in facing international and regional challenges. He noted that China has long been investing in the development of Bangladesh’s health sector and has played a role in establishing institutions such as robotic rehabilitation and cardiovascular clinics. He added that Kunming Medical University is a highly advanced institution in medical education and healthcare services, and this collaboration would open a new chapter in China-Bangladesh medical cooperation.
BMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.F.M. Siddiqui described the signing of the MoU as a landmark achievement for Bangladesh’s healthcare sector. He said that the collaboration would greatly benefit patients in Bangladesh and usher in a new era of complex surgical treatment in the country.
