Couple die by suicide in Sunamganj
A young couple died after allegedly consuming poison in Sunamganj's Dirai upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased were identified as Mahfuz, 20, son of Azizur Rahman, and his wife Monika Begum, 18, residents of Mirzapur village under Rafinagar union of the upazila. Mahfuz was a garment worker by profession.
According to locals, Mahfuz developed a relationship with Monika around five months ago and later married her without informing their families. The families later accepted the marriage and the couple had been living together. Family members said the incident occurred around 9:00 AM and they were found lying unconscious in the kitchen after consuming poison.
Later, family members rushed them to Dirai Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors declared Monika dead. Mahfuz was later referred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where he died while undergoing treatment. Dirai Upazila Health Complex Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Prashanta Talukdar said Monika had died before being brought to the hospital.
Dirai Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Enamul Haque Chowdhury said the exact reason behind the incident is yet to be known and an investigation is underway.
