Unidentified poachers have chopped off and taken away the trunk and legs of a dead elephant at Longadu upazila under Rangamati district. Presumably it occurred on Sunday night. A few hours later a relevant video clip became viral on social media. Netizens and local people have blamed Forest Department for negligence and undutifulness. Forest Department has meanwhile admitted the authenticity of the incident.
Animal rights activist Syeda Anannya Faria expressed her anger about the irresponsibility of the Forest Department. She wrote on social media that wild animals are often being subjected to cruelty by poachers in Chittagong Hill Districts recklessly.
Rakibul Haque, Chief Executive of People for Animal Welfare Foundation has stated that forest department officials cannot avoid liability for the unnatural deaths of wild creatures. He called upon the concerned ministries to execute strong actions to protect wildlife and environmental resources without delay.
