Jagannath University students on Tuesday formed a human chain demanding the swift trial and justice for the murder of the university’s former student and customs official, Bulet Bairagi.

The students formed the human chain at the university’s sculpture premises under the banner of the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU).

During the programme, students said public frustration is growing as the state fails to ensure citizens’ fundamental rights and safety, with killings, rape, and disorder on the rise. They also demanded swift justice and condemned the negligence of law enforcement.

JnU Debating Society President Moin Al Mubashshir said, “It is very unfortunate that people’s safety cannot be ensured. If the state fails to protect the fundamental rights of its citizens, the people themselves will respond. Justice must be ensured for all killings.”

JnUCSU Vice-President Riazul Islam said, “Many students of our university have been killed in the past, yet we did not get justice. Now another of our brothers, ‘Bulet Bhai,’ has been murdered. We demand a speedy trial for this killing and strongly condemn the negligence of the law enforcement agencies.”

General students and leaders of other organisations, including JnUCSU leaders, were also present at the programme.

Earlier, customs official Bulet Bairagi went missing on 24 April while returning to Cumilla from Chattogram after a training programme. On the morning of 25 April, his body was recovered from beside a hotel in the Kotbari area on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway, bearing multiple injury marks.

According to RAB, he was killed by an organised mugging gang that lured him into a trap by posing as passengers. The gang targeted him after he got off a bus at midnight in the Jagarjhuli area of Cumilla.

Bulet Bairagi was a student of Finance Department at Jagannath University.
