Police have arrested two suspects in connection with a sensational theft of Saudi riyals at the Ashkona Hajj Camp in the capital. The development was disclosed during a press briefing on Friday (May 1).
Earlier, on April 22, an organized gang stole approximately 22,000 Saudi riyals (around BDT 800,000) from a Hajj pilgrim at the Ashkona Hajj Camp. Through a joint operation supported by intelligence and advanced technology, law enforcement agencies managed to recover a significant portion of the stolen money.
The matter was confirmed by Jabeer Husnain Sanib, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Matlab Circle), Chandpur.
As part of the investigation, a coordinated raid was conducted in the Matlab area with technical assistance from the City Special Branch (SB). The operation was led by ASP Sanib, accompanied by Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman Manik of Matlab South Police Station, along with a team including Sub-Inspectors Jibon, Delwar, Sujit Chandra Dey, Sakib, and Constable Tushar.
Using radio location tracking, another team led by Additional Deputy Commissioner (City SB North) Md. Rezaul Karim traced the suspects’ movement from Gazaria in Munshiganj, passing through Demra, and eventually reaching Khilkhet.
Based on intelligence, one suspect, Nadim, was arrested from the Tongi Station Road area at around 3:00 am on Thursday night (April 30).
Subsequently, a raid in Gazipur led to the recovery of 17,500 Saudi riyals, including 35 notes of 500 riyals each. In addition, BDT 90,000—believed to have been exchanged from the stolen amount—was also seized.
Police stated that the mastermind behind the theft, Abdul Mannan, remains at large, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend him. ASP Sanib further noted that the swift resolution of the case was made possible through the effective use of information technology and coordinated efforts among different police units. Operations are still underway to capture the remaining suspects.
