Fisheries, Livestock, and Agriculture Minister Mohammad Aminur Rashid on Monday urged the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to work jointly for the development of the agriculture and fisheries sector.
"The DCs have important role for agriculture and fisheries sector development because the people have close connection with the field administration," he said while addressing as the chief guest a session of the DC conference 2026 held at Osmani Memorial auditorium here.
The government is working by giving maximum importance to the agricultural sector, he said, adding that the farmer card, credit facilities, incentives and free fertilizer, seed and pesticides distribution programme have been launched for the farmers in line of the electoral manifesto of BNP.
Mentioning that country's 75 to 90 percent people are directly and indirectly involved with the agriculture, he said if the financial position of farmers becomes strong, the overall economy of the country will be strengthened.
Giving importance to raising production of the indigenous fish, Aminur Rashid said the local fish varieties are on the way of extinction due to damage of the natural habitat of the fishes, reports BSS.
To overcome the situation, the government has taken initiative to develop community based fisheries sanctuary aiming to increase fisheries production naturally and also to ensure availability of fishes for the people.
Expressing his concern regarding the overuse of the pesticides, the minster said exorbitant use of pesticides is causing a severe damage to soil fertility as well as the environment.
So, the government is emphasizing on modern and environment friendly pesticide use and necessary steps are underway to impose control in this regard, he added.
The government is laying emphasis on strengthening local shrimp fry production capacity, he said, adding that in the case of importing shrimp fry, the government will impose strong regulations for reducing infections.
Speaking as the special guest, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said the DCs are playing important role in country's overall development and administrative works.
Tuku said holding a well accepted general election to achieve people's confidence had become possible due to impartial, skilled and integrated performance of the DCs.
Mentioning the government's initiative for the fishermen, he said along with the vulnerable group feeding (VGF), the government has provided adequate food assistance to nearly 40,000 fishermen across the country for two months and the government has spent Taka 24 crore for this programme.
State Minister for Public Administration M Abdul Bari, agriculture secretary Rafiqul I Mohammad, fisheries and livestock secretary M Delwar Hossain and food secretary Abu Taher M Masud Rana also spoke at the function as the special guests.
