The 2025-26 season of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) kicked off on Monday, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) introducing a series of reforms aimed at enhancing professionalism, player welfare and integrity.
In the opening round matches,Gazi Group Cricketers outplayed Brothers Union by nine wickets at ULAB Cricket Ground in the capital.
Elected to bat first traditional outfit Brothers Union were dismissed cheaply for just 82 in 29.4 overs with opener ShahriarKomol (29) and Foysal Ahmed (21) could reach the double digit.
Other batters failed to show any resistance against Gazi Group bowlers. They had no answer against Gazi Group pacer MdRubel's pace who claimed three wickets for just 16 runs in eight overs and was adjudged the player of the match. Leon Islam also grabbed three wickets for Grazi Group. In response, Gazi Group reached the goal comfortably in 14.3 overs with opener Nayeem Ahmed was unbeaten on 48.
Meanwhile, Bashundhara Cricketers beat Gulshan Cricket Club by 26 runs PKSP Ground two in the capital. SaifHasan scored 96 runs while Fazle Mahmud Rabbi posted 82 runs as Bashundhara put on 280 for five in 50 overs.
In response, Gulshan were dismissed for 254 in 49.5 overs despite ZubaerHossain's fighting 73 from 69 balls. RuyelMiah and Nahidul Islam claimed three wickets for Bashundhara.
In day's other matches till the report, traditional outfit Dhaka Abahani posted 181 for eight in the stipulated 30 overs against Dhaka Leopards at Bashundhara Sports Complex in the capital. Abahani's experienced batter SabbirRahman was not out on 55 from 29 balls. He smashed five wickets in his brisk knock. In response, Dhaka Leopards were 88 for two in 15th over.
Meanwhile, favourite Dhaka Mohammedanwere 100 for three in 22.2 overs with opener AnamulBojoy unbeaten on 61 after they restricted City Club at 194 for nine in the stipulated 37 overs at BKSP Ground three in Savar. A batting collapse saw City Club lost seven wickets inside 106 runs. Opener SadikurRahman top scored 56 runs. Mohammedan's bowler Nayeem Ahmed took four wickets for 20 runs. On the other handRupganj Tigers Cricket Club could manage 159 for four in 24th over after Legends of Rupganjposted 283 for three in the restricted 34 overs at Cricketers Academy in the capital.AshikurRahmanShibli was unbeaten on 99 for Legends of Rupganj.
The Dhaka League remains one of the most significant domestic cricket tournaments in the country and serves as a major source of livelihood for around 200 cricketers across 12 participating teams.
The league will be held without a Super League or relegation league this time, after the BCB revised the format shortly before the tournament begins.
Under the updated structure, the competition will feature 66 matches in total, reduced from the previously announced 69. The reduction follows the board's decision to scrap the relegation league, which was earlier expected to include three matches.
Matches will be held across six venues, including BKSP Grounds 3 and 4, Cricketers Academy Ground, Bashundhara Sports City Ground, PKSP Ground 2 and ULAB University Ground.
