BRAC Nursery holds training on papaya cultivation in Cumilla

A day-long training workshop was held in Cumilla for farmers on modern methods of papaya cultivation and sustainable agricultural management. 
Organized by BRAC Nursery, more than 50 farmers from different upazilas of Cumilla participated in the workshop held at the Madhuban Seminar Room of the Cumilla BRAC Learning Center from Monday.

The training workshop discussed in detail the characteristics of hybrid and indigenous papaya, selection of improved varieties, soil and fertilizer management, land preparation, weed control, irrigation and drainage methods. 

In addition, the appropriate time for planting seedlings, care, balanced fertilizer application and things to do to prevent flower and fruit drop were taught hands-on.

Special guidance was also given on papaya disease prevention, modern processing and marketing techniques. Horticulture Center, Cumilla Deputy Director, Agriculturist Md. Humayun Kabir was present as the trainer. In addition, BRAC Nursery, Cumilla In-charge Sourav Shil and Associate Officer (Accounts) Md. Delwar Hossain were present.

Khalilur Rahman, a farmer from Kalikapur village in Cumilla Sadar South, who participated in the training, said that he has learned new information on various topics including insect control. He hopes to get better yields in papaya cultivation in the future.

Sahida Begum from Rajameher village in Cumilla Debidwar said that this training on papaya cultivation has been timely. Especially, she has understood the issue of using hormones well. In addition, some of her previous misconceptions about hybrid varieties have also been dispelled.

The organizers said that the main goal of BRAC Nursery is to develop a sustainable agricultural system through the use of modern technology and the proper application of chemicals to control diseases and pests in agriculture.

At the end of the training, certificates were distributed among the participating farmers.
