The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) conducted drives in different parts of the country, including border areas, during April this year and seized various smuggled goods worth about Tk 183 crore 20 lakh 51 thousand.
According to a BGB press release issued on Thursday, the seized items included 3 kg and 713 grams of gold, 155 grams of diamonds, 17,519 sarees, 3,383 three-piece dresses, shirt pieces, bed sheets and blankets, 5,116 ready-made garments, 4,553 metres of clothes, 381,464 cosmetics, 800 pieces of imitation jewellery and 3,212,035 pieces of fireworks.
The seized goods also included 3,762 cubic feet of timber, 3,787 kg of tea leaves, 7,410 kg of betel nuts, 7,620 kg of coal, 3,583 cubic feet of stones, 337 mobile phones, 3,169 mobile displays, 14,099 mobile components, 24,000 pieces of medical equipment, 16,571 eyeglasses, 59,035 kg of cumin, 19,754 kg of sugar, 84,255 packets of various food items, 3,954 kg of garlic and 3,657 kg of fertiliser.
The seized vehicles and livestock included 957 cows and buffaloes, 12 trucks and covered vans, three Mahindra vehicles, 11 pickups, three private cars and buses, six trolleys and microbuses, 44 CNG-run auto-rickshaws and easy bikes, 37 motorcycles, and 19 bicycles and vans.
The BGB said the recovered arms and explosives included six foreign and local pistols, one magazine, 1,725 rounds of ammunition, eight mines, one mortar shell, two hand grenades, two cocktails and two other weapons.
In addition, the BGB seized a huge quantity of narcotics during the month. These included 2,313,876 Yaba tablets, 442 grams of heroin, 2,423 bottles of Phensedyl, 7,353 bottles of foreign liquor, 453 litres of country-made liquor, 1,343 cans of beer, 1,149 kg of cannabis, 170,046 packets of bidis and cigarettes, 1,222,945 narcotic tablets and injections, 15,598 bottles of different types of syrup, 49,542 Anegra and Senegra tablets, 22,115 alcohol-producing pills and 2,491,901 various medicines and tablets.
A total of 149 smugglers were arrested for their involvement in trafficking and smuggling various drugs, including Yaba, in border areas, the release added.
Besides, 86 Bangladeshis, two Indians and 545 Myanmar nationals were detained for illegally crossing the border, and legal action was taken against them.
