Allegations have been raised against a group of students identifying themselves as members of the "Anti-Discriminatory Students Movement" for cutting down and taking away the main gate of the abandoned house of Awami League Advisory Council member and former minister Amir Hossain Amu in Jhalokathi.
On Wednesday afternoon, the students allegedly used a drilling and cutting machine to cut and break the gate of the house on Ronals Road in the town. The house has remained abandoned since August 5, 2024. Local residents reportedly dump garbage there, creating piles of waste, and there are also allegations of drug users frequenting the premises at night. Recently, unidentified individuals reportedly put up a tin fence in front of the house, blocking the main gate.
Regarding the matter, Yasin Ferdous Ipti, member secretary of the Jhalokathi Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and convener of Chhatra Shakti, said that Amu was "a perpetrator of mass killings during the 2024 mass uprising." He described the house in Jhalokathi as "a symbol of his fascism." He said the house was set on fire and vandalized on August 5, and since then, garbage has been dumped in the ground-floor meeting room as an expression of hatred.
He further said that some people had attempted to preserve the house by installing a tin fence at the main gate. Therefore, they removed those barriers and resumed the program of turning the place back into a garbage dump. He warned that any attempt to renovate the house would be resisted.
Jhalokathi Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Imtiaz Ahmed said that the matter would be investigated and necessary action would be taken.
