Manikganj green pepper being exported to Malaysia, Dubai

Manikganj green pepper being exported to Malaysia, Dubai

Green pepper cultivation in Manikganj district is increasing sharply as the vegetable is being exported to Malaysia and Dubai.

Cultivators usually sell their green pepper at Raghunathpur market, which is widely known as 'Rater Morich Bazar' to farmers located in Shivalaya upazila of Manikganj. The pepper from that market is now meeting local demand and is being exported to countries like Dubai and Malaysia every day.

The underdeveloped communication system has now become a major obstacle to this successful market. Due to broken and narrow roads and the lack of a bridge on the Tepri canal, additional costs are being incurred in transporting goods. As a result, goods have to be moved in small vehicles several times to reach the Dhaka-Aricha highway.

Md. Shahjahan, president and chairman of the market committee, urged the government to take step to improve the drainage system and repair roads and bridges.

According to the sources, on average, about 25 tons of raw chilies are traded here every day. A large part of this (about 10 tons) is being exported directly to Dubai and Malaysia. About 7-8 tons are exported to Dubai and some 2-3 tons to Malaysia every day.

Exports to Kuwait had also started, but are temporarily suspended due to the war. Hopefully, they will resume soon."

The investment in green pepper cultivation is worrying farmers. The prices of seeds of Krishibid-1106, Bindu, Superhot and Asthir-1 varieties, known as 'current chili' in the market, are now skyrocketing.

Contacted, Shahjahan Siraj, Deputy Director of Manikganj District Agriculture Department, said, "All kinds of cooperation are being explored in the production and marketing of this export-oriented product. On the other hand, Manikganj-1 constituency MP SA Jinnah Kabir assured, "The current government will solve the problems of roads and bridges in the transportation of agricultural goods on a priority basis."

With a syndicate-free environment and assurance of fair prices, this night market in Raghunathpur has now become the trusted address of thousands of farmers in Shivalaya.
